PROGRAM Preschool to 1st grade students (Primary students) come to the media center as a group for storytime and check out. The first library skills taught are: how to handle a book, how to behave in a library, where to place materials after they have been used. Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten classes come to the media center twice a week when they spend half an hour with the libarian checking out materials, listening to a read-aloud, retelling stories with puppets. They may check out a book, a video,a CDROM and a DVD. 2nd-5th graders also visit the library once weekly during which there is a mini lesson on library/media skills and book check out.
Students may also come on their own during recess, before or after the school day. They may check out two books in English, one in Portuguese, a video, a CDROM and a DVD.
|
 |
HOW THE MEDIA CENTER WORKS 2nd to 5th grade (Intermediate) students are given a Barcode Card and may borrow up to 3 books, one magazine, one video, one CD-Rom, one DVD and vertical file materials for a two week period.
Once the two week borrowing period is up for Intermediate students, fines are charged (R$0,25 each day per item). No fines are charged for Primary students.
Absences: Students who have excused absences will not be fined for overdue materials if the due date for these materials falls on or during the period of absence. All materials must be returned or rechecked on the first day present or a fine will be charged beginning from the first day the student returns to school.
Students with fines can not check out materials until the fine is paid. Student agendas are used to communicate with parents. After one month the material is considered lost and check-out privileges are re-instated.
Parents and alumni will be charged fines for late returns. They may select books to read with their children or they may choose books from our Parent Shelf (subjects include child psychology, health and education) for their personal reference.

Overdue Notices - These are sent out to patrons every Friday.
Overdue Books – After four overdue notices, parents will receive a letter indicating that the book, video, CD-ROM or DVD is considered lost. Unless these materials are found and returned, parents will be billed for the replacement cost of the material plus shipping and handling.
Lost Materials - Materials that have been lost have to be paid for. Other materials can not be checked out unless this has been done. However, after a month, parents will be billed for the replacement, therefore, the student will be able to continue to check out books. If and when the lost material has been found and returned to the Media Center, the amount will be refunded and fines charged.
Damaged Material - If the material can be repaired the patron must pay the cost of repairing it. If it cannot be repaired, the patron must pay the cost of replacement.
