EARJ BIG 4 crew

Neíse Abreu - Athletic Director

EARJ Athletics’ philosophy is in accordance to the school philosophy “We want you to excel in academics, athletics, and the arts while you are at EARJ. And most importantly we care more about your character, what kind of person you are becoming.” Therefore, our athletic activities allow students the opportunity to participate in sports events and provide the opportunity to learn from, to participate in, and to experience team sports.

EARJ participates in several tournaments. Below we will explain a couple of them.
The “Big 8” is an Upper School tournament among eight American schools in Brazil: EAB (Brasília), Graded, PACA, EAC and Chapel (São Paulo), ASA (Paraguay), OLM (Rio) and EARJ. It occurs in November and involves students of 14 to 19 years of age. Our students participate in Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball, Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer and Cheerleading Performance. On the second semester, we participate in the Big 4 Tournament EAB (Brasília), Graded and Chapel from São Paulo and EARJ. The sports are Boys’ and Girls’ Softball, Boys’ and Girls'Futsal, Boys' and Girls’ Volleyball and Cheerleading. Practices take place three afternoons per week per sport.

The Softball tournament is in São Paulo, usually in March, and includes PACA, Chapel, Graded and EARJ for both boys and girls.

The "Little 6" is a boys’ and girls’ Field Soccer competition among six international schools in Brazil. Participating schools are: EAB, Chapel, Graded, St Paul’s, EAC and EARJ. It occurs in November.
The "Little 8" is a competition between eight international schools in Brazil that occurs twice a year, usually in November and May. Participating schools are: EAB, Chapel, Graded, St Paul’s, PACA, British, EAC and EARJ. During the first semester the Little 8 teams include Cheerleading, and boys’ and girls’ Basketball. During the second semester the Little 8 teams include Cheerleading, girls’ Volleyball, and boys’ Futsal.

Students playing in the Little 6 and Little 8 can not be 15 years of age on or before the last day of the tournament.

In addition to the Little 8 teams on the second semester, there is a boy’s Volleyball team, and a girls’ Futsal team that compete in São Paulo along with Graded, Chapel, EAC and PACA. These games provide the opportunity for all members of the team to play.

The JV Softball tournament is in São Paulo, usually in March, and includes PACA, Chapel, Graded and EARJ for both boys and girls.

For the Middle level, it is our desire to increase participation and teamwork and diminish the emphasis on competition: all students on a team will have a chance to play in a game situation. Selection of the traveling team for the Little 6 and Little 8 will be determined at the last possible moment. Practices take place two afternoons per week per sport.

The International Sports Day -“Encontro Esportivo das Escolas Bilíngües”- is a sports day competition for sixth graders that happens every year on the first semester. The students participate divided by colors and mixed with other school students. They compete in Track & Field, Volleyball, Basketball, Futsal, etc. The participating schools are OLM, Swiss School, Escola Corcovado (German School), Licée Moliere (French School), the British School and EARJ.

For both Middle and Upper School, coaches will motivate all students to better their skills and to participate on the teams. Coaches and Athletic Director will work to allow as many students to participate in a sport as is feasible and together with the Principal will work to ensure that student athletes perform well in the classroom and on the playing field or court.

All students may try out for an athletic team, however, continued participation in the sport or activity can only occur if the student remains eligible. Eligibility is determined by a student’s mid-quarter and quarter grades. Academic contracts are used to clarify policies of eligibility. Students are expected to follow standards of behavior and if this becomes a problem, a student may be removed from a team or activity. Final determination of eligibility will be decided by the Principal.

The games provide opportunities for cooperation and teamwork. In addition, it enhances student pride and identification with friends, school, and community and encourages the growth of good citizenship.

All EARJ community and especially parents are welcome to go to the Big 8, Big 4, Little 6, Little 8, Softball Tournaments and to cheer at our scrimmage games. You can find our schedules in the web site.
